What Is Working Memory
Working memory is the cognitive system that holds information in your mind while you use it. It is not just storage — it is your mental workspace for thinking.
Holding a phone number while walking across the room is short-term memory. Listening to a sentence, holding the beginning in mind while processing the end, and formulating a response — that is working memory. The difference is manipulation. Reading this paragraph requires working memory: you hold earlier sentences in mind while connecting them to what follows.
Working Memory vs. Short-Term Memory

Short-term memory is the storage buffer. Working memory adds a central executive that controls attention, manipulates stored items, and coordinates between verbal and spatial information.
Why It Matters
Working memory capacity predicts cognitive performance across virtually every domain measured.
Learning. A 2005 study by Gathercole and Pickering found working memory predicted reading and math ability more strongly than IQ. Students with low working memory struggle with multi-step instructions and lose track of complex problems.
Intelligence. The correlation between working memory and fluid intelligence is among the highest in cognitive psychology (r = 0.5 to 0.7). Some researchers argue working memory is the primary driver of individual differences in reasoning ability.
Daily life. Following multi-speaker conversations, cooking several dishes with different timings, navigating unfamiliar routes — all draw on working memory. When it is overloaded, you forget what you were doing and make errors in routine tasks.
Can It Be Improved
The evidence is more encouraging than popular summaries suggest.
Task-specific improvement is not controversial. Practice Dual N-Back and you get better at it. Practice Number Memory and your digit span increases.
Near transfer is supported. A 2014 meta-analysis by Au et al. across 20 studies found n-back training improves performance on other working memory measures — not just the trained task.
Far transfer is debated. Whether training improves intelligence or academic performance remains contested. The most positive results come from adaptive training over 4+ weeks.
Capacity can expand modestly. Recent research suggests improvements of 10-20% on standardized measures, though you will not double your capacity.
Strategies to Improve Working Memory
Dual N-Back Training
The Dual N-Back simultaneously tracks position and sound, requiring you to identify matches from N steps back. It taxes the central executive heavily — holding items, continuously updating, and dividing attention between modalities.
Aim for 20 minutes daily for four weeks. The level should keep you at roughly 70-80% accuracy.
Digit Span Training
Number Memory trains the verbal memory system. As sequences grow longer, you naturally develop chunking — grouping digits into meaningful units like phone number segments. Chunking is how chess grandmasters memorize board positions: not larger memory, but more efficient encoding.
Spatial Span Training
Sequence Memory trains visuospatial working memory independently of verbal memory. Research shows these are partially separate systems. Training both produces broader gains than training either alone.
Chunking and Organization
Working memory is measured in chunks, not raw items. A chunk is any meaningful unit. You expand effective capacity by organizing incoming information into larger chunks: look for patterns, group by category, create associations. This effectively multiplies your practical capacity.
Reduce Cognitive Load
Every background task — an unread email, an unfinished to-do, a notification — occupies working memory capacity. Write things down instead of holding them mentally. Close unnecessary tabs. Silence distractions during focused work. This is not a productivity hack; it is working memory management backed by cognitive load theory.
Physical Exercise
Aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex. Verburgh et al. (2013) found both single sessions and regular training improved working memory in children and adults. Even a 20-minute walk before a demanding task measurably improves performance.
Sleep
Working memory degrades significantly with sleep loss. Lim and Dinges (2010) found that sleeping 6 hours instead of 8 impaired working memory comparably to alcohol intoxication. No training compensates for inadequate sleep.
A Practical Plan
Week 1-2: Baseline your scores on Dual N-Back, Number Memory, and Sequence Memory. Begin daily training: 15 minutes of Dual N-Back plus 5 minutes of one other task, alternating.
Week 3-4: Continue daily. Start applying chunking deliberately — grocery lists, meeting agendas, multi-step instructions.
Week 5+: Maintain 15-20 minutes daily, three to five days per week. Retest monthly. Expect steady gains for two to three months, then a plateau at a higher level.
