Minesweeper Strategy: How to Win Without Guessing

The Rules in 30 Seconds

Minesweeper is a logic puzzle on a grid. Some cells contain hidden mines. You click cells to reveal them. A revealed cell shows a number indicating how many of its eight neighboring cells contain mines. If you click a mine, you lose. If you reveal every non-mine cell, you win. You can flag cells you believe contain mines to help track your deductions.

That is the entire rule set. Everything else is strategy.

Your First Click and the Opening Phase

Your first click is always safe -- every modern implementation guarantees this. Where you click first matters, though. Clicking near the center tends to produce larger initial openings than clicking near edges or corners, giving you more numbers to work with immediately.

After the initial opening, scan the revealed border for cells where the logic is immediately clear. The opening phase is about gathering as many free deductions as possible before you need to think hard.

The Core Deduction: Counting Neighbors

Every strategy reduces to one principle: a number tells you exactly how many mines are among its unrevealed neighbors.

Two conclusions follow. First, when a numbered cell already has that many flagged neighbors, every remaining unrevealed neighbor is safe. Second, when a numbered cell has exactly as many unrevealed neighbors as its remaining mine count, every unrevealed neighbor is a mine.

These two deductions alone carry you through most beginner and intermediate boards.

Essential Number Patterns

Experienced players recognize recurring arrangements that yield immediate conclusions without reasoning from scratch.

The 1-1 Pattern

Two "1" cells side by side along an unrevealed border. The cell beyond the far "1" (adjacent to it but not to the near "1") is always safe. This is the most common pattern in minesweeper and recognizing it instantly will transform your play.

The 1-2 Pattern

A "1" adjacent to a "2" along an unrevealed row. The unrevealed cell adjacent to the "2" but not the "1" must contain a mine, because the "2" needs more mines than the shared region can account for. Flag it immediately, then use the flag to resolve further deductions.

The 1-2-1 Pattern

Three numbers in sequence: 1, 2, 1. The mine for the left "1" is at the left end of the unrevealed row, the mine for the right "1" is at the right end, and the cell directly behind the "2" is safe. Two flags and a safe cell from a single recognition.

The 1-2-2-1 Pattern

Four numbers in sequence: 1, 2, 2, 1. Mines are at the far left and far right, and both cells behind the "2" values are safe. Less frequent but clears two safe cells at once.

Corner and Edge Strategy

Cells along the board border have fewer neighbors -- corners have three, edges have five, compared to eight for interior cells. This reduced neighbor count makes numbers far more constraining.

A "1" in a corner with only one unrevealed neighbor means that neighbor is definitely a mine. A "1" on an edge with one unflagged unrevealed neighbor means that cell is safe. These deductions are trivially easy at the border but require more complex recognition in the interior.

Always scan edges and corners first when stuck. The information density is highest there.

Chord Clicking: The Speed Technique

Chord clicking is the most important speed technique. When a numbered cell has all its mines flagged, chord clicking reveals all remaining unrevealed neighbors simultaneously. Instead of clicking five individual safe cells, one action handles all five. In competitive play, this reduces total clicks by 40-60%.

To use it effectively, adopt a flag-then-chord workflow: identify a mine, flag it, then immediately chord-click the resolved number next to it. This creates a chain reaction where each chord click reveals new numbers that lead to new flags.

When You Must Guess

Not every board is solvable through pure logic. Some configurations are provably ambiguous.

The 50/50 corner. Two unrevealed cells with a "1" between them. One is a mine, one is safe, and there is no way to tell which.

Isolated cells. A single unrevealed cell with no constraining numbered neighbors. Zero information.

Disconnected regions. Unrevealed areas with no logical connection to solved regions.

When forced to guess, prefer cells with more revealed neighbors and cells near board edges, where constraints are stronger. On expert boards (30x16 with 99 mines), roughly 15-25% of boards require at least one guess.

Advanced: Counting Remaining Mines

As you clear the board, track how many mines remain. In the endgame, the global mine count becomes a powerful constraint. If 3 mines remain and 5 cells are unrevealed, 2 of those cells are safe. Combined with local number constraints, this often resolves otherwise ambiguous positions.

Practice With Intention

Reading about patterns and recognizing them during play are different skills. Start on beginner boards (9x9, 10 mines) and focus on identifying every 1-1 and 1-2 pattern before clicking. Move to intermediate (16x16, 40 mines) when beginner feels trivial, then to expert (30x16, 99 mines) when intermediate is comfortable.
