How to Improve Your Aim: Training Routines for FPS Games

The Fundamentals: Sensitivity and Setup

Before training mechanics, get your settings right. Bad sensitivity is the single biggest obstacle to good aim, and no amount of practice will fix it.

cm/360 measures how many centimeters of mouse movement it takes for a full 360-degree in-game turn. Most competitive players use 25-50 cm/360. Your eDPI (effective DPI) is mouse DPI multiplied by in-game sensitivity. Typical ranges by game:

Start at the middle of the recommended range for your game and adjust from there. Change sensitivity gradually -- large jumps reset your muscle memory.

Disable mouse acceleration. In Windows, uncheck "Enhance pointer precision." On macOS, use LinearMouse. Acceleration makes identical hand movements produce different cursor distances, making consistent muscle memory impossible.

Mouse Grip Types

Your grip affects what kinds of aiming movements you can make. There is no best grip -- each has trade-offs.

  • Palm grip: Entire hand rests on the mouse. Most comfortable. Good for arm sweeps and tracking, less precise for flick corrections. Best for low-sensitivity players.
  • Claw grip: Fingers arched, fingertips and palm base touching. Faster clicks, more precise micro-adjustments. Good all-around grip.
  • Fingertip grip: Only fingertips touch the mouse. Maximum precision for tiny adjustments. Least stable for large movements. Best for high-sensitivity wrist aimers.

Try all three and commit to whatever feels natural. Forcing an uncomfortable grip hurts aim.

Daily Training Routine (15 Minutes)

Structure your practice around the three core aiming skills. Fifteen minutes of focused daily training beats an hour of unfocused playing.

Tracking (5 minutes): Follow a moving target with your crosshair as smoothly as possible. The goal is zero gap between your cursor and the target at all times. This trains the smooth, continuous motor control used when aiming at strafing enemies. Use the Aim Trainer to practice tracking targets that appear and move.

Flicking (5 minutes): Snap your crosshair from one point to another as quickly and accurately as possible. Start on one target, then flick to a new one the instant it appears. This trains the explosive, ballistic movements used for headshots and quick target switches. The Aim Trainer is ideal for this -- each new target requires a fast, accurate flick.

Micro-adjustments (5 minutes): Make tiny corrections to place your crosshair on a precise point. This is the fine-tuning that separates good aim from great aim. Practice by holding your crosshair on a small target and resisting the urge to overcorrect when it moves slightly.

Tracking vs Flick Aiming

Tracking is continuous aiming -- keeping your crosshair on a moving target. Critical for sustained fire weapons (SMGs, beam rifles). Relies on forearm control and prediction.

Flick aiming is discrete -- snapping your crosshair to a new point in one decisive motion. Critical for single-shot weapons (AWP, Wingman, Widowmaker). Relies on muscle memory and reaction speed.

Most games reward both. Prioritize whichever matters more for your weapons, but train both.

The 80/20 of Aim Improvement

Most of your gains will come from a few high-impact changes:

  • Consistent sensitivity. Use the same sensitivity across all games. Your muscle memory transfers between games if the physical mouse movement is the same.
  • Large mousepad. At least 40 cm wide. Low sensitivity is useless if you run out of mousepad space mid-fight.
  • Proper posture. Sit with your forearm resting on the desk, elbow at roughly 90 degrees. Your arm should move freely without your shoulder hunching up.
  • Daily practice. Even 10 minutes a day of deliberate training builds muscle memory faster than 5 hours of casual play per week.

Common Mistakes

  • Sensitivity hopping. Changing sensitivity every few days resets your muscle memory. Pick a sensitivity, commit to it for at least two weeks, then adjust by small amounts if needed.
  • Aiming with your wrist only. Wrist-only aiming limits your range of motion. Use your arm for large movements, wrist for fine corrections.
  • Training only in-game. Isolated aim training drills remove variables (movement, game sense, stress) and let you focus purely on the motor skill. This is more efficient than trying to improve aim while also managing game mechanics.
  • Ignoring reaction time. Aim speed has two components: how fast you identify the target (reaction time) and how fast you move to it (motor speed). Train both. The Reaction Time Test isolates the first component.
