How Chimps Beat Humans

Ayumu's performance was not a fluke. Across hundreds of trials, he consistently memorized the positions of nine numbers after an exposure time of just 210 milliseconds — roughly the duration of a single eye blink. When researchers shortened the display time, Ayumu's accuracy barely dropped. Human participants, including university students who practiced the task extensively, saw their scores collapse.

Dr. Matsuzawa proposed a compelling explanation: chimpanzees may possess a form of eidetic memory — a photographic-like ability to capture and retain a visual scene in an instant. Humans, by contrast, tend to process visual information more sequentially, reading and interpreting rather than simply recording.

One leading hypothesis for this difference is the cognitive trade-off theory.
